Fountains of Bellagio

A must-see while in Vegas, these fountains and the surrounding 9-acre lake cost $52 million to build. Each water fountain is individually controlled and shoots water up to 250 feet in the air. The waters move in accompaniment to classic and modern songs by performers including Frank Sinatra, Pavarotti and Elton John. Crowds begin forming early around the lake to watch the free shows that take place every half-hour Monday through Friday from 3 pm to 8 pm and weekends from noon to 6 pm. Starting at 8 pm on weeknights and 6 pm on weekends, the shows begin every 15 minutes until midnight.

It takes a staff of 115 people to prepare and maintain this beautiful indoor garden area. The colorful displays of nature are changed regularly in accordance with the season. Volcano at the Mirage

This peaceful waterfall by day erupts into a powerful volcano at night. Beginning at 8 pm every evening, the volcano erupts every 15 minutes, shooting 100-foot flames into the air and causing smaller explosions and a ring of fire in the surrounding lagoon. Prime viewing is along the strip-side sidewalk, which fills up quickly. Arrive early to claim your spot.

You’ll want to claim a viewing spot early on, as this outdoor roadside show is among the most popular in Vegas. Visitors line up four-, five- and six-people deep along the sidewalk in front of the Treasure Island hotel to catch the action between the pirate ship Hispañiola and the British frigate HMS Britannia. Every 90 minutes, every evening, the pirates battle and exchange cannon and musket fire in Buccaneer Bay. The kids will be wowed by the pyrotechnics and the live action.

Grand Canyon South Rim Adventure

Set aside an entire day (all of 12 to 13 hours from hotel pick-up to hotel drop-off) for this excursion that makes three stops at the Grand Canyon. Red Rock Canyon

First stop on this interactive tour is Red Springs -- a desert oasis with ancient Indian petroglyphs -- which was a very sacred and spiritual place for the ancient Anasazi. After taking in the view you’ll understand why many old cowboy movies were filmed at this location. Look for mustangs, burros, big horn sheep, and beautiful Aztec sandstone formations. You’ll then travel back up into the mountains to about 5,000 feet above sea level for another spectacular view before descending back to the valley floor. Finally you’ll travel along the base of the multi-colored Wilson Cliffs (ancient 3,000-foot-high sand dunes), before searching for mustangs and burros in the Joshua tree forest.
